While offshore wind delivers substantial carbon savings compared to fossil fuel-based energy, the sector still generates emissions, particularly from the Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) burning fuel oil, which are used in the construction, commissioning, and maintenance of offshore wind farms.
As global offshore wind capacity grows, these lifecycle emissions risk increasing, unless cleaner alternatives are adopted. The marine and offshore wind sector cannot afford to delay – phasing out fossil fuel reliance must begin now, if we are to meet critical decarbonisation goals.

E-Mission Zero highlights the role that hybrid-electric vessels, such as Bibby Marine’s forthcoming electric-Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (eCSOV), can play in reducing fuel consumption and cost, cutting operational emissions, and improving the long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness of wind projects.
It also emphasises the need to rethink how offshore energy is delivered – through in-field electrification, infrastructure readiness, and operational innovation.
